On April 22nd, Earth Day will be celebrated internationally for the forty-third time. Since 1970, the day has been used to mark the modern environmental movement and the groundbreaking laws it spawned, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. In honor of April and Earth Month, here are a few simple tips for packing and shipping in an environmentally-friendly way.
- Plan ahead, save money (and Mother Earth!) – Fuel is expensive and the emissions are far from “green,” so one of the easiest things you can do is consider sending packages and mail via ground instead of air. Express and overnight shipping by air uses more fuel than a ground shipment, so helping the Earth can be as easy as planning ahead!
- Ship large shipments rather than many small packages – If you have several small, light packages, consider sending a single large shipment instead. . Shipping
emissions are reduced, as well as the paper waste created by boxes, packing material, and labels. - Reuse boxes and packing materials – When you receive a shipment or gift in a brand new corrugated box, saving the box and storing it for your (or your friend’s) next moving project decreases the overall waste. Using a box that is too big equates to more corrugated waste, and unnecessary packing material is then needed to fill up the empty space in the box.
