What is Freight Shipping?

Freight shipping refers to the transportation of large shipments of commodities and goods via air, land, or sea. A freight shipment is generally anything that exceeds 150 pounds and 165 inches in length plus girth. Any shipment smaller than that is usually handled by popular carriers such as UPS, FedEx, or USPS. Nearly any product can be shipped via freight, but be sure to double check with your provider.

Freight Shipping Terms to Know

Full Truckload (FTL): If you have a shipment or combination of shipments capable of filling an entire trailer, you can utilize FTL shipping. FTL shipping, usually requiring around 25 pallets, is through road or rail and ensures that your shipment arrives in full and on time. FTL shipments are direct shipments from one location to the destination.

Less Than Truckload (LTL): LTL shipping is available for those whose shipment is not large enough to fill a trailer. LTL shipping is the most common method of freight shipping and generally fills 1-5 pallets. LTL shipping is a less direct method when compared to FTL shipping and often requires multiple stops and transfers.

Partial Truckload (PTL): Partial truckload shipping is appropriate for shipments larger than LTL shipments, but not able to fill an entire trailer. While stops and transfers are possible, it’s more likely that your shipment will be sent directly to its destination. This method is for smaller shipments that are more time-sensitive than LTL shipments.

Intermodal: This method of freight shipping refers to using a combination of transportation modes -- most often rail and truck. Intermodal shipping is designed to deliver your shipment at the lowest cost.

Expedited: The most expensive method of freight shipping, expedited shipping is appropriate when you need to ship as quickly as possible. It primarily uses truck and air to deliver your shipment.
